Water
Softeners
The
need to reduce the hardness of water is the most common
form of water treatment. Hard water is created when naturally
soft rainwater percolates through subterranean rock strata
and dissolves many solids, including, in particular, calcium
and magnesium. Where the water supply contains a significant
level of these salts it is called 'hard water' because of
the hard deposits created when this type of water is used
in many applications. The hard deposits set like concrete
on kettles, showers, boilers, tanks and heat exchangers.
The deposit build up leads to an insulating effect increasing
energy costs due to ineffiency and will result in premature
failure of the plant. As well as the deposits the hard minerals
in solution detract from the performance of soaps and detergents,
which then have to be used in greater volumes to achieve
the desired cleaning. This not only adds to the level of
deposits occurring inside the systems and equipment, it
also adds significantly to the chemical waste discharged
into the sewer and environment.
Chenpump’s
answer to this problem is to install an ion exchange softener,
replacing or exchanging them with 'soft salts'. This is
achieved by using one of our fully automatic water softeners.
The water passes through an exchange resin vessel inside
a pressure vessel. The resin removes the calcium and magnesium
ions from the solution and exchanges them for sodium ions.
When the resin is about to become exhausted the softener
commences a regeneration phase, which is initiated by a
timer or volume control. The regeneration is achieved by
the automatic head drawing in common salt ( brine ) through
the resin which displaces the captured calcium and magnesium
ions and exchanges them for the sodium ions in the brine.
The unwanted calcium and magnesium ions are then flushed
to drain without entering the service line.
